Social mobility is inhibited by systemic factors called opportunity gaps. In education, opportunity gaps refer to disparities in access to quality education, resources, and academic opportunities among different groups of students.

The Impact: Research demonstrates the cumulative power of opportunity. In a 26-year longitudinal study, Dearing et al. found that sustained access to opportunities through high school was strongly associated with educational attainment and early-adulthood earnings, particularly for children from low-income households.

For children from low-income households, greater accumulated opportunity was associated with:

• A predicted four-year college graduation rate rising from approximately 10% to 50%
• Approximately $10,000 higher annual earnings at age 26
